South Africa vs England: 1st ODI Suspended After Hotel Staff Test Corona Positive
Rescheduled first ODI between South Africa and England was again abandoned after two hotel staff members were tested positive for corona virus.
The match had initially been delayed from Friday to Sunday.
The first ODI between South Africa and England in Paarl, which was rescheduled to Sunday, has been suspended after two staff members at the hotel where the visitors were staying were tested positive for coronavirus. The start of the match was initially delayed after the tests turned positive, and later the match was called off. Two members of England’s touring party have also tested positive for coronavirus, although it is not known if the two are players or members of the support staff.
A decision on the remaining ODIs will be taken after the test results are fully clarified by medical team.
“We regret that we are unable to play in today’s ODI, but the welfare of the players and support staff is our primary concern and later the decision was made that this game should not take place,” Ashley Giles, Managing Director of England men’s cricket said. At the moment the teams are focusing to ensure that the players and support staffs are safe and don’t go thru any health issues. With keeping that in mind, they came up with joint decision to cancel Sunday’s match,” said Cricket South Africa Director of Cricket, Graeme Smith. The General manager of the hotel confirmed that two staff members had tested positive.
“At this stage hotel management are completely unaware, how the staff members became infected as they have not left the hotel area since November 16, the Manager, Roy Davies mentioned. The first ODI was initially scheduled for Friday, but was postponed after a South Africa player tested positive for corona virus.
No further updates were shared about the ODIs, will hope things gets fixed as fans are eagerly waiting for the live action between the teams.
