Manchester United vs Liverpool Match Highlights

M Salah opened the scoring in the first half (18′) but Mason Greenwood (26′) ensured there was nothing between the two sides at the break as he converted coolly from Marcus Rashford’s pick-out.

Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood also got themselves on the scoresheet as United booked their place into the fifth round of the competition. M Salah scored his first goals at Old Trafford with a brace but Liverpool’s winless run goes on.

Greenwood had two chances early on but Alisson saved the first and the second went past the post. Liverpool started to dominate possession thereafter and took the lead in the 19th minute when Roberto Firmino slipped in Salah, who dinked the ball over Dean Henderson.

Paul Pogba had a great chance to put United ahead before the break, but his free header from Luke Shaw’s corner went over the bar.

The hosts took the lead three minutes after half-time when Greenwood set up Rashford to finish, but Liverpool responded well and Salah grabbed his second on 58 minutes, just after James Milner missed a sitter.

Marcus Rashford completed the turnaround with his fourth Old Trafford goal against Liverpool (48′) but Salah restored parity after running onto Roberto Firmino’s pass (58′).

Salah then went close to completing his hat trick on the break, but shot straight at Henderson.

After Edinson Cavani was fouled on the edge of Liverpool’s penalty area, Fernandes curled a free kick beyond Alisson with 12 minutes left for his 16th goal of the season.

The stage was set for Fernandes, who settled the tie 12 minutes after his introduction with a venomous free-kick from the edge of the box to set up a fifth-round tie at home to West Ham next month.

After Rashford left with a knee problem on which Solskjaer said he will have a scan on Monday, Cavani almost made it four in the 90th minute but his header clipped the post.

The two sides’ league meeting a week ago disappointed many but this encounter was full of goals and the Premier League champions have now won just one of their seven games in all competitions since Christmas.

Liverpool’s poor form continued at the home of the fierce rivals; they have now failed to progress beyond the fourth round in five of their six seasons under Jurgen Klopp and the Premier League champions have recorded one win in their last seven games in all competitions.

It was the first time that Liverpool have lost back-to-back matches in all competitions since March 2020.

“Great goal, good free kick,” United’s manager said of Fernandes. “When you leave him out like I did today, he stayed about 45 minutes after training yesterday shooting free kicks so I was pretty confident he could score one if he got the chance. He’s never happy with me when I tell him to go inside after training when he’s playing the next day so he got some practice yesterday.”

Manchester United will host West Ham in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
