India crush England by 100 runs to stay unbeaten in World Cup

India continued their dominant run in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, as they thrashed England by 100 runs in the 29th match of the tournament at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. India, who have won all six of their matches so far, are now at the top of the points table with 12 points, while England, who have lost four out of five games, are languishing at the ninth spot with only two points.

The match was a one-sided affair, as India outplayed England in all three departments of the game. India’s captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first, hoping to put up a big total on the board. However, India got off to a shaky start, as they lost Shubman Gill (9), Virat Kohli (0) and Shreyas Iyer (4) within the first 10 overs. England’s pacers David Willey and Chris Woakes bowled with discipline and accuracy, and kept India under pressure.

But Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul steadied the ship for India, as they added 87 runs for the fourth wicket. Rohit Sharma played a brilliant knock of 87 runs off 101 balls, hitting 10 fours and three sixes. He was well supported by Rahul, who scored 39 runs off 58 balls. The duo took India past the 100-run mark in the 23rd over, and looked set for a big partnership.

However, England struck back with two quick wickets, as Willey dismissed Rahul and Rohit in successive overs. India were reduced to 125 for six in the 28th over, and were in danger of being bowled out cheaply. But Suryakumar Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja came to the rescue, as they counter-attacked with some aggressive batting. Suryakumar Yadav smashed 49 runs off 47 balls, hitting four fours and a six, while Jadeja scored 18 runs off 13 balls. The duo added 57 runs for the seventh wicket in just seven overs, and gave India some momentum.

India’s lower order also chipped in with some useful runs, as Jasprit Bumrah (16), Kuldeep Yadav (9) and Mohammed Shami (1) took India to 229 for nine in their allotted 50 overs. For England, Willey was the pick of the bowlers, as he finished with three for 45 in his 10 overs. Woakes and Adil Rashid also took two wickets each, while Mark Wood claimed one.

Chasing 230 for victory, England got off to a disastrous start, as they lost Jonny Bairstow (14), Joe Root (0) and Ben Stokes (0) within the first six overs. India’s pace duo of Bumrah and Shami bowled with fire and accuracy, and rattled England’s top order. Bumrah dismissed Bairstow and Root in his first two overs, while Shami removed Stokes in his third over.

England were reduced to 30 for three in the sixth over, and were in deep trouble. Dawid Malan and Jos Buttler tried to rebuild the innings, as they added 26 runs for the fourth wicket. Malan scored 16 runs off 17 balls, hitting two fours and a six, while Buttler scored 10 runs off 23 balls. But their partnership was broken by Kuldeep Yadav, who trapped Malan lbw in his first over.

Buttler was soon dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav, who got bowled out with a quick deliver England were tottering at 61 for five in the 15th over, and had no hope of chasing down the target. Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone showed some resistance, as they added 36 runs for the sixth wicket. Ali scored 15 runs off 31 balls, while Livingstone scored 27 runs off 46 balls.

But their partnership was ended by Shami, who bowled Ali in his seventh over. Shami then ran through England’s lower order, as he dismissed Woakes (10), Willey (16) and Rashid (13) in quick succession. Bumrah finished off the innings by bowling Wood (0) in his seventh over.

England were bowled out for 129 in 34.5 overs, losing by a huge margin of 100 runs. For India, Shami was the star of the show, as he finished with four for 22 in his seven overs. Bumrah also took three wickets for 32 runs in his 6.5 overs. Kuldeep Yadav and Jadeja took two and one wickets respectively.

Rohit Sharma was adjudged the player of the match for his splendid 87, which set the platform for India’s victory. India have now won 12 consecutive matches in the World Cup, dating back to the 2019 edition. They will face Sri Lanka in their next match on November 2 in Kolkata. England, on the other hand, will face Pakistan in their next match on November 3 in Mumbai.
