New Delhi: Comedian Kapil Sharma was recently summoned by the Crime branch of the Mumbai police to record statements against car designer Dilip Chhabria. The latter reportedly duped the comedian of Rs 5.7 Crore.

Kapil Sharma is an Indian stand-up comedian, television presenter, actor and producer known for hosting “The Kapil Sharma Show”. He previously hosted the television comedy shows Comedy Nights with Kapil and Family Time with Kapil.

Dilip was arrested by the Mumbai police in connection with car finance and fake registration racket on December 29. Kapil was called for enquiry on January 7 by the police. He met the Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) in charge API Sachin Waze and recorded his statements.

“I read about Dilip Chhabria and his scam in newspapers and that is when I decided to meet Mumbai Police Commissioner. Kapil Sharma had also asked Chhabria to design a vanity van for which full payment was done but he didn’t deliver. We had also complained to Economic Offences Wing (EOW) earlier regarding it. I am happy that people like Chhabria are being arrested. There are a lot many people involved in white-collar crime. I do not have the exact amount that we paid, that is known to my accountant,” India Today quoted Kapil as saying.

Dilip Chhabria is a popular Indian car designer and founder of DC Design. He also designed and manufactured the DC Avanti, which is considered India’s first sport car.

In September 2020, Kapil Sharma filed a complaint with the economic offences wing (EOW) alleging that he had ordered a customised vanity van in 2017 and paid Chhabria a total of Rs 5.7 crore, but it was never delivered. In fact, Chhabria was demanding more money and even parking charges, Sharma alleged.

This comes after the comedian was called by the Crime Intelligence Unit over false registered cars seized

“Preliminary inquiry shows that it is a fit case of cheating and misappropriation of funds. We are in the process of registering the FIR,” said Milind Bharambe, joint commissioner of police (crime). Police recorded Kapil Sharma’s statement on Thursday.

In 2020, Chhabria sent him an invoice bill of Rs 12-13 lakh for parking the yet-to-be finished van in his garage for two years. This annoyed him and he approached the EOW.
