Match Highlights : Juventus vs Bologna

Brazilian midfielder Arthur Melo notched his first goal for the Turin club in the first half with a deflected strike and USMNT midfielder Weston McKennie headed home the second after 71 minutes.

They got off to a good start on Sunday when Arthur’s speculative effort ricocheted off Bologna’s Jerdy Schouten and into the bottom corner after 15 minutes.

It was the first goal for the ex-Barcelona player in 19 appearances since joining Juventus last summer from the Liga side in a transfer worth up to 82 million euros ($99 million).

The 30-year-old’s Bologna goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski made some stunning saves to keep his side in the match. A brilliant double save from goalkeeper Skorupski to deny Ronaldo and Bernardeschi, however, kept Bologna in the game. The Pole also superbly denied Juan Cuadrado in a one-on-one situation.

The strike proved the difference in an otherwise scrappy first-half. Bologna had chances to score, but the visitors were wasteful in front of goal and rarely challenged Wojciech Szczesny.

It was a much-needed victory for Pirlo’s side following the disappointment of their 2-0 defeat to Inter Milan last weekend as it cut the gap behind league leaders AC Milan to seven points and the champions also have a game in hand.

“It’s very important for us. We watched yesterday how both Milan teams dropped points,” McKennie after Milan lost 3-0 to visiting Atalanta and Inter were held 0-0 at Udinese.

“We’re a game down and we still have to play both of them in Turin. We’re three points closer and I think it’ll be a fight to the end. We’ll see who wants it more.”

AC Milan held top spot in Serie A on Saturday despite falling 3-0 at home against Atalanta after second-placed Inter were held to a goalless draw at Udinese.

Roma are third after a 4-3 win over Spezia on Saturday with Juventus moving fourth ahead of Atalanta into the Champions League berths, seven points behind AC Milan with a game in hand.

Juventus are fourth with 36 points from 18 games, one point behind Roma in third. Bologna are 13th with 20 points.

Napoli can overtake Juventus when they play at Hellas Verona later Sunday.
