England, Man United great Wayne Rooney officially retires from professional football

England legend Wayne Rooney on Friday announced his retirement from professional football to become the full-time manager at second-tier side Derby County.

Wayne Rooney, former Manchester United and England captain, who took temporary charge of Derby in November, is now focusing on his coaching career.

Wayne Rooney tried to make the announcement that he was ending his playing career low-key by announcing it at the same time as he was confirmed as Derby County manager on a full-time basis, but tributes to the former England and Manchester United captain still poured in on social media.

Wayne Mark Rooney (born 24 October 1985) is an English football manager and former player who currently manages Championship club Derby County, for which he previously served as interim player-manager.

England’s record goal-scorer Wayne Rooney has received a contract through 2023 to manage the second division team.

“Despite other offers I knew instinctively Derby County was the place for me. I can promise everyone involved in the club and all our fans, my staff and I will leave no stone unturned in achieving the potential I have witnessed over the last 12 months of this historic football club,” Rooney announced.

Rooney, who scored an all-time record 53 goals for England and is also Manchester United’s record scorer, joined Derby in a player-coach capacity a year ago from MLS side DC United and made 35 appearances for the club.

Wayne Rooney is also Manchester United’s record scorer with 253 goals

He had been interim manager at Derby since the club parted company with Dutchman Phillip Cocu in November.

“When I first arrived back in the UK I was completely blown away by the potential of Derby County. Despite other offers I knew instinctively Derby County was the place for me,” Rooney said.

Rooney is also United’s record goal scorer with 253 goals scored between 2004 and 2017. Over the course of those 13 years at Old Trafford, he won five Premier League titles as well as the Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup among his haul of 16 trophies.

The striker not only overtook Bobby Charlton as United’s record goal-scorer but he also eclipsed the World Cup winner with England, scoring 53 goals in 120
